ASIFA around the world - Polen

Each year ASIFA Poland prepares a choice of polish animated films, which we try to present to a wider audience. These are mainly films created by the upcoming generation of young filmmakers, except last two, which were made by children as a developing of imagination. The mainstream of polish animation is dominated by auteur film, which stems from the history of polish animation as well as from the character of education in the field. It is mainly centred around several fine art academies, which focus on a more experimental approach to animated film, treating it as an artistic medium and taking advantage of its rich means of expression. This attitude towards animated filmmaking, results in creating very diverse, often astonishing films, and is continued after graduation. The films, which will be presented here, have been created by young filmmakers and reflect the tendencies and directions towards which polish animated film is heading. This genre has always been a medium, which explored new fields - experimenting not only with film language, but also with narration, the visual, sound, as well as the time and place of the screenings. When it comes to constant search of the new, it is animation, that best allows to go beyond limits and find new solutions. Animated film is the most diverse and rich film genre and it is this diversity that we would like to focus on in this presentation. Wiola Sowa President of ASIFA Poland

ASIFA – Animation around the World Portugal

Casa da Animação is a cultural centre, located in Porto and dedicated to animation. Founded in 2001 with the support of the European Capital of Culture – Porto 2001, it is a project for training and cultural programming. Its objective is to bring together arts in general whilst operating on the basis of a cultural net co-operation. In order to promote Portuguese cinema both at home and abroad, Casa da Animação organises programmes that are presented all over the world with the support of partnerships and co-operations with other cultural agents and institutions. In recent years, we have observed that the field of animation is developing well in Portugal, and that slowly the industry is beginning to emerge as a partner and a driving force within the European creative industries. Casa da Animação invests in public awareness campaigns to promote the potential of this art expression in order to gain the attention of younger people. Animation has developed in colleges, institutes and universities providing for young new talents whilst producers are increasingly able to create small, sustainable structures which allow animation to expand. The short animated films that we are presenting are a perfect illustration of these efforts and expectations. These films, produced in 2009 and 2010, reflect the artists’ ability to create innovative, beautiful stories that remind audiences of the special nature of Portuguese culture without the luxury of large budgets.
