Music & Animation Concert

Béla Bartók's "The Miraculous Mandarin" and other works

After the success of last year’s Lotte Reiniger concert at Musikhalle Ludwigsburg as part of the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film we are pleased to offer another musical delight for the fans of music and animation at this year’s festival. The Oscar nominated Hungarian animation filmmaker Géza M. Tóth developed his own animated visualisation for the renowned musical piece "The Miraculous Mandarin" by Béla Bartók – played live and in real-time. The Hungarian pianists Rita Melem and Benjamin Zsoldos (Pécs) will take a chance at this masterpiece – composed and premiered as a ballet in 1926 and, due to its frivolity, subsequently cancelled by the former mayor of Cologne Konrad Adenauer – on two pianos. As a piece for two pianos “The Miraculous Mandarin” ranks among the most sophisticated piano pieces of the early 20th century. At the beginning of the Béla Bartók Animation & Music night, the animation filmmaker Géza M. Tóth will introduce his artistic works and selected animated films.

In the middle part, the pianists will play three works by Bartók:

Rita Melem: "Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs"

Benjamin Zsoldos: "Sonata"

Rita Melem und Benjamin Zsoldos: selected pieces from "Mikrokosmos"
