International Competition

The International Competition is the artistic heart of the Festival. Here you will find first-rate, artistic animated shorts produced in the last year. An international jury, made up of prominent figures in animated film, presents the following awards:

  • Grand Prix: State of Baden-Württemberg and City of Stuttgart Grand Award for Animated Film with a cash prize of 15,000 euros.

  • Lotte Reiniger Promotion Award for Animated Film: Award for the best graduation film by a film student with a cash prize of 10,000 euros. Sponsored by MFG Film Funding Baden-Württemberg.

  • SWR Audience Award: 6,000 euros in prize money

Young Animation

The Young Animation competition screens the best films made by students from international film and art schools.

  • The award for the best student film is accompanied by 2,500 euros in prize money and is sponsored by Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg and MFG Film Funding Baden-Württemberg.

  • The FANtastic Award with a cash prize of 1,000 euros, awards the best animation talent. Prize for the best animation talent – donated by the Animation Family, the most faithful fans of ITFS.

Tricks for Kids

The children’s film festival, Tricks for Kids, presents animated children’s films and series that are just as challenging as they are entertaining.

  • The award for the best children’s animated film totals 4,000 euros and is sponsored by Studio 100 Media GmbH. The winner is selected by a jury of children.

  • Award for the best children’s animated series, sponsored by MIP Junior 2017. The winner is selected by a jury of experts.

AniMovie

In the feature film competition AniMovie, a selection of internationally outstanding full-length animated films will be screened. AniMovie Award is the prize for the best feature-length animated film.

spotlight – Festival for Moving Image Communication and the Animated Com Award grow together. For the first time, both awards will be presented together in a gala for advertising films and applied animation on Saturday, May 6 in the Alte Reithalle.

AWARD FOR APPLIED ANIMATION IN THE FIELD OF ADVERTISING:

The call for entries will go out in mid-Dezember.

The newly initiated Animated Games Award Germany of the 24th Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film rewards the German computer game, which is characterized by the best visual design and aesthetics.

The “Games” section has developed further. Interlinked with animation, it will this year be located at the Stuttgart Kunstgebäude with an area of almost 2,000 sqm. This year’s GameZone with the focus topic “Playful Art / Meaningful Games” presents developments in the games field over the next two years, introduces trend-setting university projects, shows the latest links between virtual and augmented reality, and invites visitors to join in and play there and then. In addition there will be the award ceremony of the prize “Animated Games Award Germany”.

The prize is endowed with 5,000 € and is donated by MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg mbH.

German Animation Screenplay Award

This award aims to promote outstanding German screenplays for feature-length animated films. The award is accompanied by 2,500 euros in prize money and is sponsored by Telepool GmbH.

The Amazon Online Award has been presented in cooperation with Amazon Instant Video Germany GmbH at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film for the first time in 2016.

The online competition is applicable across all submission categories and competitions. Films from the different submission categories can be recommended by the ITFS pre-selection juries for participation in the Amazon Audience Award. Out of the recommended films an Amazon selection committee will choose 20 finalists for participation in the online competition. These films will be presented on the Amazon Video platform where the audience can vote for the nominees and the winner film.

German Voice Actor Award

The award for the best German-language dubbing artist in a feature-length animated film – in cooperation with the Renitenztheater.

Crazy Horse Session – The 48H Animation Jam

The Crazy Horse Session takes place in co-operation with M.A.R.K.13 electronic media and is supported by MFG Film Funding Baden-Württemberg and Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg.

Animation students as well as independent animators and animation producers aged 30 years or younger may participate. The organisers will choose four to five teams from all of the applicants. All of the teams, each with two members, must develop within 48 hours an animated film between 30 seconds and 2 minutes) using the same character – the Festival’s mascot Trixi.

Start: Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at noon / End: Friday, May 5, 2017 at noon.

A jury will select the best film. All films will be presented during the 48h Animation Jam award ceremony.

Trickstar Business Award

Trickstar Business is the name of the animation industry’s new business prize which will be awarded for the first time during Animation Production Day 2017.

The Trickstar Business Award recognises national or international innovative and groundbreaking business models for project or companies in the animation industry. This makes Trickstar Business the world’s first animation prize to be explicitly focused on business. The prize in the amount of 7,500€ is sponsored by the Region Stuttgart.

All projects selected for APD 2017 which have an innovative business concept can put themselves forward for the Trickstar Business Award.

The winner will be announced on the evening of 5th May during a prize-giving ceremony in the rotunda of L-Bank in Stuttgart.
