FILM DESIGN 1 & 2

Cinematic Experience is a subject at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg that is open to all students during their basic studies – as a requirement in the first year and as an elective in the second. Experimenting is not only allowed here, it’s expressly encouraged. Without the typical guidelines and limits of the market, the students develop short films in unusual and unique narratives while taking into consideration many formal – often underrepresented – approaches. They apply both animation-technical real scenes and experimental types of games in mixed forms. Under these conditions, every year a series of filmatic jewels are created which impress by virtue of their individual expressive forms.

MOTION DESIGN

The graduate programme project concentration Motion Design qualifies designers, art directors, and promotion producers for management positions in media and creative companies. The audiovisual design of films, TV, and web design, motion graphics, text and information animation, interactive and game design, screen promotion, trailer producing, and digital staging of cultural and music events is a key element of media productions. At the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, in addition to realising their own, freely-designed productions, motion designers have the possibility to work closely with authors, directors, producers, animators, set designers, sound designers, and composers – from the planning phase to the final product. Each year, the Filmakademie awards diplomas to Media and Motion Designers who successfully make their way in professional careers.

Country Focus Croatia: Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb

Sun, May 7 / 2 pm / Metropol 2

The Department of Animated Film was established in 1999. It is unique at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in which it encourages parallel mastering of classical animation techniques and learning the techniques of new media and contemporary art practices, especially those of conceptual nature. Students demonstrate a wide range of approaches to narrative design, animation techniques, directing and aesthetics, as a result of encouraging individuality and creativity, with the aim of developing a high-quality artistic personality in the traditional modernistic spirit of the Zagreb School of Animated Film. Films also evidence that students follow
contemporary tendencies and do not hesitate to experiment with film as a medium. Combining those two approaches, each student forms a recognizable personal style as a foundation for future career development. MA graduate works are in the regular distribution of Zagreb Film, with which the department has signed a cooperation agreement.

The film festival SHORTS – a tri-national film festival on the Oberrhein – annually offers students the chance to show their films for the first time with awards totalling 10,000 euros. The B.A. programme “media.design and production” (m.gp) creates a refugee for the personal and artistic development of students who are aiming for careers in film, animation and interactive media. m.gp conveys the principles of classic animation, computer animation, visual effects design, scripts, film, sound, graphics and interactive media. In advanced semesters, animation and VFX can be chosen as concentrations. As a complement to the M.A. programme “Media and Communication”, a Master’s programme “FILM” is to be set up in which applicants can choose among concentrations in feature films, documentary films, animated films and intermedial films.

The Cooperation
Idents are an ideal challenge for animation students. A precise task, a manageable length, and a defined deadline provide clear conditions for the students to give free rein to their fantasies. Cartoon Network and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences – Art and Design have cooperated for seven years, and the participants are as enthusiastic now as they were in the beginning. The newly created idents are a part of the programme, as are the award-winning BA and MA works and current series highlights from Cartoon Network.

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences – Art and Design

In a programme unique in Switzerland, the Bachelor of Arts in Film/Animation offers an education in the theory and practice of all essential areas of animation film. The students’ freedom in their choice of technology and medium allows them to create their own visual language in addition to learning the necessary professional, technical, and manual skills of the trade. The Master of Arts in Design / Animation builds on this and optimizes later chances in the job market. For the implementation of the master project, the goal is for students to join in a co-production project with external production companies.

Cartoon Network
There’s always something going on at Cartoon Network! Crazy cartoon series full of wacky characters like the Powerpuff Girls and the three bears from “We Bare Bears” provide for tons of fun action! Turn it on and experience new adventures every day with the award-winning series from the Cartoon Network Studios like “The Amazing World of Gumball” or “Adventure Time”.

Multiplatform Brand Solutions – Kids Networks: Gerhard Wolf, CartoonNetwork.de

The section “Work in Progress” allows producers and directors to present their animated feature length film projects in front of animation professionals from all over the globe, who in turn have the opportunity to be among the first to see new and interesting productions. Four quality projects, ranging from the state of “in concept” to “in production”, will be presented in 25 minutes slots (including a Q&A session). In their presentations the producers and directors will not only talk about their productions, but also show first footage and trailers of their film projects.

Content Creation for Virtual Worlds: Challenges of merging valuable storytelling with cutting-edge technology in creating VR content

Wed, May 3 / 5 pm / Metropol 3

Virtual reality is bound to revolutionize filmmaking in the years to come. By enabling new types of storytelling, VR turns filmmakers into architects of complex and engaging narrative worlds that allow viewers to interact with, or even influence the storyline. VR creators therefore need to be able to combine well-established storytelling practices with new skills that go well beyond the mastery of VR technology. To create meaningful and captivating VR content, we have no choice but to fundamentally rethink the way we tell stories. Astrid Kahmke, head of VR Creators’ Lab (DE) – a training programme for VR content creation supported by Creative Europe – will address the seismic shift in creative thinking required to harness the potential of immersive storytelling. Vanessa Labarthe, VR project manager at Animation Studio Folimage (FR), will share specific challenges encountered during the development of “Amnesia”, an animated VR series where stop motion and 3D animation techniques come together in a 360° environment. Fred Baus, CEO of realab (LUX), will explore how user-friendly software solutions like Virtelio can support creators in their endeavor to tell interactive and immersive stories.

Präsentation der Festivaltrailer

Students at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Animationsinstitut have co-operated with students from Stuttgart Media University (HdM) to develop four worlds, each producing a short film and a game experience. The trailers will be presented at the ITFS this year, as well. The VR experiences and apps can be played during the entire Festival week in the GameZone. As thirdyear projects, these technologically innovative and stylistically very different animated short films and games had only four months of production time. Lots of thanks go out to the students, the instructors Johannes Weiland and Julian Jungel, the production supervisor Christian Müller, the entire Animationsinstitut’s team, and Prof. Dr. Stefan Radicke from the HdM. You can find detailed information on the project related to the installations in the “GameZone” section of the catalogue.

Hochschule Offenburg

Sun, May 7 / 5 pm / Metropol 3

At the state university of applied sciences, Offenburg houses modern studios for stop motion and computer animation, visual effects design, interactive media, video and sound. Here students know each other and build strong teams for animation and film production. The supervision from professors and staff is also more individualised than at most other universities.

+ Cartoon Network meets Hochschule Luzern

Sat, May 6 / 3 pm / Gloria 2
