Science Fiction and Underground –
Chad Vangaalens Animationsprojekt „Tarboz“

On the 16 screens in the Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart’s gallery b, a non-linear version of Chad VanGaalen’s short film project “Tarboz” can be see, which the artist has planned as part of an animated feature-film project “The Translated Log of Inhabitants”. In “Tarboz”, VanGaalen further develops the world that he designed for his music videos ten years ago. In this bizarre world, populated by inter-galactic trash collectors, strange plants and androids, extra-terrestrials are normal. The film does not follow any clear plotline but draws in viewers with its sound and images. VanGaalen sees himself in the footsteps of “Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials” from 1979. “Tarboz” stands in the tradition of science fiction films from the 1970s, and it is not without reason that the title sounds similar to “Zardoz”, the famous post-apocalyptic film from 1974.

Wed, April 18 – Sat, June 9, Galerie b, City library, Mon-Sat 9 am – 9 pm

Opening: Wed, April 18, 7:30 pm
Meet & Greet with Chad VanGaalen: Fri, April 27, 5 pm

Who doesn’t dream of being able to watch the creation of an animated film? Sputnic’s Live Animation Cinema shows this process live for the audience each evening. The viewers see an animated film and, at the same time, can watch how it is animated, cut, dubbed and set to music live by actors. Live Animation Cinema combines animated film with puppet theatre and acting in an extraordinary performance: “The Futurological Congress.” In the midst of violent confrontations at the fringes of the global congress in Costricana, Ijon Tichy, a famous astronaut, gets a sneaking suspicion: Is it possible that the military is using gases that make people happy as a weapon?

Tichy tries to escape, but he quickly has to ask himself what is reality and what is illusion… He learns that there is a new form of government – the chemocracy! Amazing cosms as far as the eye can see, strewn with glittering new word creations and galactic creativity:

Four actors, one live musician, over 100 handmade animation plates, 3 animation tables and an International Space Station – the famous novel by world-renowned science fiction writer / philosopher Stanisław Lem can be viewed as a fantastical journey through space and time on the theatre stage!

Studiotour

From lifelike sculptures and figures to animatronics, portraits and decors of all styles, sizes, and in any number – Steegmüller Skulpturen offers it all. Their creations can be seen in films for cinema and TV, in commercials, leisure parks and stage shows of famous bands. From their own or a given design, the company builds custom-made creatures, high-quality objects of art, and entire worlds. They also make masks for the stage and films, customised to fit the wearer’s face and body. In his spare time, Jörg Steegmüller faithfully reproduces “Star Wars” characters. For many years already, he has been on friendly terms with Nick Maley, and assisted him in his work on the new Yoda.

The workshop discussion offers participants an exciting look behind the scenes and insights into the various work techniques and the current “Jim Knopf” project. Visitors also get to see Chewbacca, C-3PO, Darth Vader, several Stormtroopers, Stefan Raab, Verona Poth, and Captain Hook.
