Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design

Class Prof. Günter Jacki

The possibility of using moving images as a mode of expression is one of the skills of a visual designer. Internet and thus web design have joined animation, AV and videos.
The interpretation of a subject using moving images requires continuity both with regard to thought and organisation. This continuity was seen as a challenging introduction to conceptual thinking for the enhancement of the degree course and of course for later work in practice.
Every student studying under Prof. Günter Jacki had the opportunity to express a subject as he or she wished. This did not only ensure the proper motivation for the adventure at hand, but also guaranteed an educational diversity of stylistic expression and narration at the end of each semester. Furthermore the magnitude of motifs thus achieved - the representation of time-relevant, literary, mythologically symbolic, at times surreal and bizarre subjects – bring about a variety of new impressions.
It was suggested that the previous semester for typography be used for orientation in order to facilitate the choice of subject. The aim was to underscore the flow of images with humour and irony as well as the necessary gravity. Without exception, all of the works show initial experiments with moving images.
The technical requirements which are often demanding and the fluid transformation of the idea into the image were in the hands of Joachim Löhmann and Peter Jacobi.

"Tricks im Süden": Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgar

Prof. Gerwin Schmidt – Typografic short films, 4th Semester Communication Design at the Stuttgart
State Academy of Art and Design: During the 4th semester students work on typographically experimental short films in order to learn about typography in moving and three-dimensional space. The point of departure is always a subject for which the students must animate a text with approximately 50 words. This length is the equivalent of the volume of information that must be created for a video clip or opening credits. Examples from three different project years have been selected for the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film.

  • Project "LaLeLuBlaBla" (10 short films): children’s songs, pop style, sung and set to music by the students: typo-films for the anti-playroom.
  • Project "3 2 1 Now" (8 short films): lettering moves and turns, it blurs and distorts, it is painted and splattered, it is beamed, sung about and devoured into animated films from countdown …… Now.
  • Project "The Ego Song Contest" (9 short films): typographic video clips for songs that have been composed, sung and set to music by the students about their own self. Ego-Pop, ego-Punk, ego-Rock and ego-hits compete for the audience’s favour.

FAMU - Film and TV School / Academy of Performing Arts (Prague)

The oldest Film School in Central Europe, the Prague Film and Television Academy of the Performing Arts (FAMU) was established in 1946 following the end of World War II. Together with two sister schools, DAMU, the theatre school, and HAMU, the music school, the film school forms a part of The Prague Academy of the Performing Arts (AMU) which is a university level institution that grants degrees the BcA, MgA, and PhD level. Ten independent departments: Animation, Center of Audiovisual Studies, Cinematography, Directing, Documentary Film, Editing, Production, Scriptwriting, Sound, and Still Photography enroll students for three to five years of study for the BcA and MgA and PhD. degrees.

Animation Department on FAMU
This department is the second youngest one of FAMU. Its basic conceptual rationale is that animated film is one of the dramatic arts, whereas analogous Czech art-school departments tend to view it usually as a kinetic art. The programme of manually or computer produced animated films develops the aptitude for artistic expression, complete with the mastery of requisite spatial, cartoon, and puppet animation techniques.

University of Applied Sciences Offenburg

THE MEDIA DEPARTMENT of the University of Applied Sciences, Offenburg is located in the idyllic Rhine valley between Karlsruhe and Freiburg not far from Strasburg. Always practice-oriented, students are taught, design and produce in the new studios for film/video, audio/sound, stop-motion/computer animation and visual effects, opened in 2009, and in the university's own cinema. The graphic workshop and the laboratory for interactive media explore new methods for contemporary digital design. THE ARTISTIC DEGREE COURSE, "medien. Gestaltung und produktion" (m.gp – media. design and production) offers a retreat for the personal and artistic development of students whose career goals are film, animation and interactive media. Creative experiments and the critical reflection thereof are a central element of the course. Students work in teams in the studios, laboratories and workshops. THE OBJECTIVE OF m.gp is the formation of sensitive and creative design personalities in all disciplines. After an entrance examination m.gp concentrates on the fundamentals of classic animation, computer animation and visual effects design in the first three semesters. Subsequently, animation can be chosen as the main focus in the advanced course. The course is a Bachelor of Arts degree and is completed after seven semesters. FIRST PRIZES can be won by students at the Offenburg film festival SHORTS. IN THE MASTERS DEGREE COURSE "Medien und Kommunikation" (MuK – media and communication) students focus in-depth on film, animation, interactive media and media art.

Baden-Württemberg Film Academy: Cinematic experimentation 1 & 2

Cinematic experimentation at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy is a subject which is open to all students during the basic course – it is compulsory in the first year and optional in the second year. Here experimentation is not just permitted, it is expressly recommended. Cinematic experimentation teaches the new approaches and methods of contemporary media, without the specifications and restrictions so typical of the market. Students adopt unusual and unique narrative style with due regard to formal and often underrepresented approaches to develop short films. In doing so, students incorporate animation, documentary and experimental elements to create hybrid forms. In this environment a whole range of film treasures are created ever year, whose appeal lies in their individual forms of expression.

Académie Libanaise des Beaux Arts
Founded in 1943, the "Académie Libanaise des Beaux Arts" ALBA was the first National Institution for Higher Education in Lebanon. The many partnership agreements signed between the different specialized Schools at ALBA and numerous Institutions abroad, allow several students and instructors' exchanges, as well as joint projects realization. ALBA's pedagogical policy revolves around enticing students to participate in semi-professional and university competitions of international scale.
ADVERTISING AND GRAPHIC ARTS FACULTY
This faculty sets itself the ambitious task of tutoring highly competent managers/executives, in different highly expanding fields such as Graphic and Communication, Multimedia Design, Photography, Illustration & Comics Design and Animation. The Animation specialization is essentially based on animated movies conception and realization. The different techniques and trainings taught (2D and 3D animation, stop motion, script writing, sound, editing and production) are at the service of the creation of a cinematographic work. The conceptual phase is, at least, as valued as the total mastery of the tools in use. The curriculum requires 3 years of studies for a BA, of which 2 years of common practice with all Graphic Arts students (drawing and art culture) are mandatory. A master’s degree requires 5 years of university studies.
PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS - Fiction Movies Production Houses (cartoons, virtual images, characters animation), Advertising Production Studios (Creation of Characters, packshots, text animation), Television networks (Graphical representation, end credits)

Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction

20 years after the foundation of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, its students are still being taught and films produced according to the principle of "learning by doing". Students learn how to make films by making films: they write the screenplays, create the sets, operate the camera or direct, create the animation and the visual effects, compose the film music or work on sound design or editing. 250 films of all genres are made in this way annually and are regularly shown not only at film festivals. The degree course at the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction takes 4 ½ years after which graduates receive a degree from the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy. Technical directing is an additional qualification, otherwise unique in Germany, which allows graduates of computer science to combine their technical ability with artistic design. Training concentrates on idea generation, concept and design, the production of animated short films and visual effect sequences for games, advertising and documentary films, the study of real time animation and interactive media. Cartoon animation, live animation and stop-motion are available to students as well as all the common hard- and software systems and the newest equipment for producing stereoscopic 3D films. A variety of awards at festivals and the excellent career opportunities for graduates support the concept. The school presentation at the ITFS 2011 not only provides a current and direct insight into the various opportunities and facets of the course at the Institute, but is also a platform where supervising lecturers, employees and team members can present current productions. And not least it is an opportunity to pose questions, make comments and discuss.

Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest - MOME
For over 132 years, MOME has played a leading and influential role in Hungarian academic art education. The MOME educational model incorporates a multi-disciplinary system, merging theory and practice. Our program introduces students to professional problem solving methods through specific practice-based projects, which encourage continuous dialogue between students and faculty in the disciplines of Architecture, Design, Media and Theory. There are eleven BA and twelve MA programs with 3 years of doctoral traininat MOME. This innovative 3+2+3 year system will culminate allowing students to obtain DLA and PhD degrees.

Animation Education

The professional education of animation "designer-artists" has been ongoing at the University since 1980. The BA and MA courses in animation at MOME merge traditional methods of creating animation with the efficiencies of digital tools. During their studies each semester, students have the opportunity to produce their own content, such as animated shorts, TV specials, commissioned animations, interactive applications, games, communication tools and other formats. Both traditional animation techniques (puppet animation, hand-drawn animation) and animation methods applied in new media (interactive applications, digital animation) play important roles in our educational programs. These modular programs consist of practical tasks that build upon one another, in which creative practice is paramount. Students solve tasks by taking on the roles of a director or a "lead designer". Such tasks range from elaborating the creative concept to overcoming obstacles of execution.
